Maths

Autumn — In school:

We will start by developing place value knowledge to 1000 building on prior knowledge of tens and ones. We will be ordering, comparing and recognising 10 and 100 more and less. They will secure their knowledge of addition and subtraction, focusing on developing understanding of adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers using column addition.

The children will also focus on securing their 3, 4 and 8 times tables which we will be developed through problem solving. They will also continue to recap their 5 and 10 times tables.

Spring — In school:

In maths we will begin by continuing our multiplication and division work, focusing on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, discussing the inverse operation and building confidence with multiplication facts.  We will apply this knowledge to comparing number statements and being able to give reasons for our answers. Our multiplication work will continue as we introduce the column method of multiplying with one and two digit numbers. We will also learn to dived one and two digit numbers, introducing a variety of methods to help the children explain their answers and apply this to problem solving skills.

Following this, we will be starting our unit on statistics, starting with gathering data to create tally charts. This will lead into different ways of communicating data including bar charts and pictograms. Children will learn to interpret data in these forms as well as communicating own data that we will collect. We will also begin to look at recognising fractions, including ¼, ½, counting in tenths and making a whole.

This term our shape work will include recapping vertices and horizontal lines in both 2D and 3D shapes which will help use mathematical vocabulary to describe the properties of shapes. We will also be measuring area and perimeter, looking at adding sides, subtracting lengths and equivalent units of measurement.

Summer — In school:

In maths we will begin by continuing our work on fractions from last term, focusing on equivalent fractions, for example how 1⁄2 could also be 2/4, this will lead on to our work comparing and ordering fractions based on size. We will be adding and subtracting simple fractions, building on our understanding of the numerator and dominator, we will be doing a lot of this practically using a variety of manipulatives.

Following this, we will be starting our unit on telling the time. We will begin by telling the time to the closest five and one minute before moving on to using am and pm using a 24 hour clock. Later in the term we will build on this by comparing durations of time as well as using a start and end time whilst measuring in seconds.

We will also continue our times tables work ready for the transition into Year 4, we hope by the end of the year children will be confident in their 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 and 11 times tables as well as challenging themselves with their 6, 7 and 9 times tables.

Helping at home:

Times tables are an essential component in all areas of maths, running through these regularly with your children will help with their mental maths, whether this be a couple of minutes on the way to school or when they are getting ready for the day, this will hugely help both their confidence and mental recall. Each child has a Times Tables Rockstars login which is a great way to engage the children in their timetables, if you are unsure of their login please ask you child to ask me and I will send it home!

Telling the time is also a concept that we will be developing across the year, asking your child what the time is, what time dinner is etc will help support their knowledge of time and will increase confidence when we focus on this in class.

Finally, I will be setting maths specific homework, supporting your child with this and ensuring they are accessing this would be great, thank you for your continued support!
