Hello and welcome to the summer term. It is an exciting time as we say goodbye to our Treasure Seekers topic and the Victorians and move onto our new topic -
We thought this topic would fit perfectly with now because, even though we can't physically travel anywhere, we can explore lands near and far using great technology and wonderful books!
During the next 3 weeks of lockdown, we are going to be virtually visiting a country in the United Kingdom - Scotland (which we wouldn't need our passport for!) We are going to be using the fabulous stories of Katie Morag to explore what life may be like on a small Scottish island and also use technology to explore other areas of Scotland.
We are really excited to be starting this new topic and hope you enjoy learning about new places, and experiencing snippets of different locations from the comfort of your home! Maybe one day you will be able to visit these places in real life...for now, use your fabulous acting skills and imagine you are there!
We are looking forward to catching up with you all over the next week.

Start each phonics session by reviewing all the graphemes (letter spellings), making all the possible phonemes (sounds). Log into phonics play and play 'Flashcard- Speed Trial' or 'Flashcard - Time Challenge'. Practice Phase 5a or ALL

This week practice words with the 'a' grapheme and the 'ch' grapheme.
These spellings can make different phonemes (sounds).
The a grapeme can make an 'a', an 'o', an 'ar' or an 'ai' sound. Words might include 'laptop and splash' or 'want and squad' or 'bath and faster' or 'apron and bagel'.
The ch grapheme can make a 'ch', 'c', or 'sh' sound. Words might include 'church and chirping' or 'school and chemist' or 'machine and chef'.
Log into phonics play to play Cheeky chimps - where you need to read the words and match the banana to the chimp with a word containing the same phoneme (sound).
Also, there are some activities below which work on the a and ch sounds...
Try to read for 15 minutes every day - sharing a range of texts and taking it in turns to read or be read to.
There are some great websites, where you can access books to read with your child.
1. Use Oxford Owl for their library of free e-books. You can select the age for differing levels of texts and there are non-fiction and fiction to choose from.

This week we would like you to begin to read and enjoy the stories of Katie Morag, starting with Katie Morag Delivers the Mail.
After reading this first book, feel free to read and enjoy others in the series - many can be found on You Tube.
Once you have listened and read a selection, you might want to watch some of the series, found on BBC iplayer!
Once you have enjoyed and explored the stories of Katie Morag, we would like you to plan and write a character description of Katie Morag. Start by using the template idea below to write ideas and notes about Katie Morag and then see if you can put these notes into full sentences to write a description of her.
Start with some basic information - where does she live? Who does she live with? How old is she?
Then talk about her appearance - what does she look like? What does she wear?
Finally go on to her personality and interests - What is she like as a person? What does she like doing?
Here is an example of a description of a different character:
The gruffalo lives in the middle of a forest with his child. We are not sure of his or his daughter's age because they are quite private creatures.
The Gruffalo has two large, curved horns at the top of his head. He has bright orange eyes and a slimy, black tongue. The Gruffalo has an enormous, poisonous wart on the end of his wet nose. Running all down his back are sharp pointed prickles. His claws are as sharp as razors but his teeth are blunt and brittle. His fur feels as soft as a cotton wool but it is matted and tangled. He has knobbly knees and turned out toes. His feet are gigantic and he stomps through the forest whilst swishing his long bushy tail.
Although the animals in the forest are scared of the Gruffalo, because he is so terrifyingly large, he has actually never hurt any of the other animals so he may not be a fierce as we think...although he does want to eat the mouse! Both the Gruffalo and his little girl like to go on lots of walks around the forest, where they must be hunting for meals.
This week in maths, we would like the children to start again by practicing counting on and back in 2s, 5s and 10s. If confident, they could then move onto times table practice - recalling their 2 and 10 times table in order and then in a random order (1 x 2, 2 x 2 , 3 x 2 and then 5 x 2, 8 x 2, 2 x 2)
They can practice both verbally and also use the following games to practice.
Daily Maths Focus Ideas
This week we would like the children to practice a range of their maths skills, using the plans from White Rose. Each day there is a different focus, these include:
Making equal groups (grouping)

This week we would like you to focus on map work and develop this very important geography skill.
Task 1. First explore the UK - use google maps and other maps you might have at home to find out the names of the 4 countries which form the United Kingdom. Can you also name any seas or oceans around the UK? Perhaps you could even find the capital cities of each country, where you live and some Scottish islands, where Katie Morag could live?
Task 2. Explore the Isle of Struay, where Katie Morag lives. Have a look at the map and see if you can find the different places on the question sheet.
This task links very much to art too! Can you make your own 3D map? This could be a map of where you live, it could be Katie's island or any other place you want to make a map of!

As we are thinking about Katie Morag's life in Scotland, I wonder if you could research what animals might be found in Scotland. Would they be the same animals as we have in England or are there some different animals?
Use these websites to find out about different Scottish animals...
Could you then use your knowledge of Scottish animals to create a Scottish food chain? Think about which animals are herbivores (plant eaters), omnivores ( plant and animal eaters) and carnivores (animal eaters) to organise the animals in your food chain, like below:
