During the Spring term, Year 5 will be using Holes as their class text. Links to the film and also an audio book are included below. We will also be reading some of Hillaire Belloc's Cautionary Tales and Enid Blyton's Animal Stories and we will also explore some of Kipling's Just So Stories as well as Sophia Sweet's Animal Superheroes Saving the Planet.

This term the class will be focusing on their comprehension skills and we will be using the class text to test our vocabulary, retrieval, summarising, inference, predicting, comparing and authorial intent skills. For our writing projects we will firstly begin with an information text about an endangered animal and we will progress towards writing two interlinked short stories, one in the present and one in the past that are linked, inspired by the form of Holes.

We will continue to use the Natural Curriculum  to link our Science and Grammar skills. A link to their excellent website is included below. We will also continue learning different spelling strategies and will be using the No Nonsense spelling strategies that are attached below. Every child is also encouraged to enter the school poetry competition. Links to help with this are included below.

During the Autumn term, Year 5 used Private Peaceful and Friend or Foe as their class texts. We also read from a series of short stories about animals who served during both World Wars.

Alongside the historical work that we drew from all three texts, we looked at specific parts of English grammar. This term we focused on expanded noun phrases, the active and passive voice and modal verbs as well as looking at various spelling rules and learning new ways to remember spellings.
