Maths

  • Year 4 Maths – Autumn Term

    During the autumn term, Year 4 pupils will be developing their knowledge and confidence across a range of key mathematical concepts.

    Place Value

    • Reading, writing, ordering, and comparing numbers beyond 1,000

    • Rounding any whole number to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000

    Measurement

    • Calculating the area of different shapes and spaces

    Addition and Subtraction

    • Adding and subtracting four-digit numbers using formal written methods

    Multiplication and Division

    • Focusing on the 3, 6, 9, 11, and 12 times tables

    • Recalling multiplication and division facts for tables up to 12 × 12

    To make maths even more fun, we will be linking with our Roman topic, learning the value of each Roman numeral. Ask your child to show you how to write the Roman numerals for their age—or even yours!

Spring Term

During the spring term, Year 4 pupils will continue to build on their mathematical knowledge and develop greater fluency and confidence across a range of key areas.

Multiplication and Division

We will begin the term by extending our work on multiplication and division. Children will develop a secure understanding of factor pairs, learning how to work systematically to identify all the factors of a given number. They will then apply their knowledge to written calculations, using the short multiplication method in an expanded form before progressing to calculations involving one or two exchanges.

Length and Perimeter

Pupils will explore length and perimeter, measuring accurately in kilometres and metres and finding equivalent lengths. They will use this knowledge to calculate the perimeter of rectilinear shapes and regular polygons, applying both reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Fractions and Decimals

After half term, we will delve into the world of fractions. Children will learn to recognise and work with mixed numbers and improper fractions before moving on to decimals. They will make clear links between tenths and hundredths and their existing understanding of fractions and place value, strengthening their overall number sense.

Throughout the term, pupils will be encouraged to explain their thinking, use precise mathematical language, and apply their learning to a range of practical and written problems.

Summer Term

During the Summer term, Year 4 pupils will continue to build on their mathematical understanding, developing greater fluency, reasoning, and confidence across a range of topics following the White Rose Maths scheme.

Decimals

We will begin the term by deepening our understanding of decimals. Pupils will learn to recognise and write decimal equivalents of tenths and hundredths and relate these to fractions. They will compare and order decimals and begin to round decimals to the nearest whole number, strengthening their place value knowledge.

Money

Children will apply their decimal knowledge to money, learning to estimate, calculate, and solve problems involving pounds and pence. They will practise written methods to add and subtract amounts and develop confidence in solving real-life problems involving money.

Time

Pupils will revisit and extend their understanding of time. They will read, write, and convert time between analogue and digital (12- and 24-hour) clocks, as well as solve problems involving durations of time. This will help them apply their learning to everyday contexts.

Shape

Children will explore properties of shape, including identifying and comparing angles and classifying shapes based on their properties. They will learn to identify acute and obtuse angles and use this knowledge to describe and sort 2D shapes.

Position and Direction

Towards the end of the term, pupils will develop their understanding of position and direction. They will describe positions on a grid using coordinates and learn how to translate shapes, building important foundations for future geometry work.

Throughout the term, pupils will be encouraged to explain their reasoning, use accurate mathematical vocabulary, and apply their skills to a range of problem-solving and investigative tasks.
