Maths

Autumn 1

After a long break over summer it is important that we remember the topics taught in Year 4, esspecially our times tables. This skill is used in a variety of different mathmatical concepts and if fundemental for progress.

During the Autumn term 1, Year 5 will cover:

  • Place Value
  • Addition and Subtraction

Place value will include reading, writing, comparing, ordering and rounding numbers to 1,000,000. We will be practising the short addition and subtraction methods and looking at the meaning behind an inverse operation.

Autumn 2

During Autumn 2, Year 5 will cover:

  • Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions

The multiplication and division unit will include finding the multiplies and factors of numbers. We will also look at what are cubed, squared and prime numbers. In our first fractions unit we will understand what equivalent fractions are. This will lead onto comparing, adding and subtracting, improper fractions and mixed numbers.

*****

Spring 1

During Spring 1, Year 5 will cover:

  • Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions

The second multiplication and division unit will include, multiplying a 2 digit number by a 2, 3 and 4 digit number. They will also be using the short division method to divide a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number. In our second fractions unit they will be multiplying unit and non-unit fractions by an integer and mixed numbers. This will lead to finding the whole and a fractions of an amount.

*****

Spring 2

During Spring 2, Year 5 will cover:

  • Decimals and Percentages
  • Perimeter and Area

The decimal and percentages unit will include the following; finding equivalent fractions and decimals, converting between percentages, fractions and decimals, ordering fractions, decimals and percentages and lasty rounding.

The perimeter and area unit will include; calculating perimeter of regular and compound rectangles and polygons. This will lead onto finding the area of regular and compound shapes.

Summer 1

During Summer 1, Year 5 will cover:

  • Stastics
  • Shape
  • Position and Direction

The stastics unit will include; reading, drawing an interpreting different graphs. This involves, line graphs, pie charts, bar graphs and reading bus timetables.

In the shape unit it will include;  drawing, estimating and measuring different angles. Understanding the difference between acute, straight line, obtuse and reflex angles will help to order them together.

In the position and direction unit it will include; plotting coordinates, translating shapes, working with lines of symetry and lines of reflection.

*****

Summer 2

During Summer 2, Year 5 will cover:

  • Decimals
  • Negative Numbers
  • Converting Units
  • Volume

The decimal unit will include; adding and subtracting decimals within and across 1, adding decimals with the same and different amount of place values and finding decimal sequences. Then we will be multiplying and dividing amounts by 10, 100 and 1000.

In the negative numbers unit it will include counting through 0's in 1's, count through 0's in multiples. This will lead onto comparing and ordering negative numbers and finding the difference between the amounts.

In the converting unit it will include converting between; kilograms and kilometres, millimetres and millilitres and different units of length. They will then look at converting between metric and imperial measurements, units of time and timetables.

Lastly, in the volume unit it will include; looking at cubic centimetres, comparing and estimating volume and looking at capacity.

Resources

Place value and times table knowledge underpin all mathematical knowledge. Please do access all of the resources listed to support your child with these fundamental aspects of mathematics. A variety of different learning styles have been catered for in this collection of links.

Short Multiplication Method

Year 5 Multiplication using the Short Method

Short Division Method

A speed overview of how to do short division. 2 example questions demonstrated, one has 5 as a divisor, the other has 7. This is a quick review vid. Useful if you have forgotten what you were doing.

Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions are fractions that have a different numerator and denominator, but are the same value. Find more resources at https://easyteaching.net

Improper Fractions & Mixed Numbers

Introduce children to improper fractions and mixed numbers. Teach children how to convert between the two. Find more fraction resources (and much more!) at https://easyteaching.net
