At Holbrook we follow the Letters and Sounds DfE scheme which is a fun and effective way to teach children to read and write using synthetic phonics. This is supplemented by additional additional such as: Jolly Phonics, Alphablocks and Mr Thorne Does Phonics. Children at Holbrook learn 42 letter sounds with an action for each one. This multi-sensory approach helps to motivate the pupils and remember the sounds in a fun way.
The children will learn in different stages: Letter sounds, letter formation, blending, segmenting and tricky words – words with irregular spellings. We begin with phase 2 in Early Years and work to the end of phase 6 by the end of Year One when the children will have a phonics screening test. Children are retested again in Year 2 and Year 3 if necessary.
'Mr Thorne Does Phonics', Alphablocks' and Jolly Phonics are useful online resources for you to use at home to support the phonics learning that your child will be engaging with at school. Your child's teacher will give you information about which letter sounds and phonics phases it would helpful for you to practise at home.
