Cycle B- Autumn Term

During the Autumn term, Year 5 will be reading Boy In The Tower by Polly Ho-Yen as their class text. The story centres around a character called Ade. Ade is a just an ordinary boy with an ordinary life. He loves living at top of a tower block and he loves his life, but one day a building falls randomly near his home, an incredibly stable building

Cycle B- Spring Term

 

Our class text this spring term is Tom's midnight garden by Philippa Pearce:

 

When Tom is sent to stay at his aunt and uncle's house for the summer, he resigns himself to endless weeks of boredom. As he lies awake in his bed he hears the grandfather clock downstairs strike . . .eleven . . . twelve . . . thirteen . . .

Thirteen! Tom races down the stairs and out the back door, into a garden everyone told him wasn't there. In this enchanted thirteenth hour, the garden comes alive - but Tom is never sure whether the children he meets there are real or ghosts . . . This entrancing and magical story is one of the best-loved children's books ever written.

Cycle B- Summer Term

 

Our class text this spring term is Anglo Saxon Boy by Tony Bradman

 

1065: Magnus is the son of Harold Godwinson, lord of the Southern Saxons and ruthlessly ambitious claimant to the throne of England. Overnight, Magnus finds himself cast centre-stage in the blood-soaked family feud that led to one of history’s most famous battles.


This is the family tragedy behind 1066: live it with Magnus, as the wolves of history close in on his Anglo-Saxon boyhood.

Cycle A- Autumn Term 

During the Autumn term, Year 5 will be reading Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo and Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian as their class texts. 

 

Alongside the historical work drew from these texts, we looked at specific parts of English grammar. This term we will be focusing on expanded noun phrases, the active and passive voice and modal verbs as well as looking at various spelling rules and learning new ways to remember spellings.

Cycle A- Spring Term 

During the Spring Term, Year 5 will be reading Holes by Louis Sachar as their class text.

 

The book centres on Stanley Yelnats, who is sent to Camp Green Lake, a correctional boot camp in the desert in Texas, after being falsely accused of theft. The plot explores the history of the area and how the actions of several characters in the past have affected Stanley's life in the present.

Cycle A- Summer Term

Our class text this term will be Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.

 

In this story, the main character Michael is washed up on an island in the Pacific after falling from his parents' yacht. He struggles to survive on his own but he soon realised there is someone close by. This story takes the reader on a suspenseful journey and will create adventure in new places.
