How can I help at home?

This is a question that is often asked. Our work in school is made easier with collaboration with parents at home. We are fortunate at Holbrook that we have many pro-active parents, supporting their children to achieve great things. We're aware that everyone has busy lifestyles - here a few things at home you could do support your child in Year 2.

Reading Support at Home

We encourage the children to read regularly at home - little and often is more beneficial than a whole book in one night, once a week. Reading a few pages a day means the children get to practise their phonic decoding skills often, which really helps to embed their understanding. Also, it encourages them to get into the habit of reading more, which we hope would help build a love of reading and a passion to explore more and more texts, as reading opens the doors to so many worlds!

Please encourage your child to read a little each day and take part in our reading challenge.

Writing and Spelling

Help support your child with their weekly spellings, sent out each Friday. These spellings will help consolidate spelling patterns and rules learnt in class over the week.

Encourage writing at home in a variety of ways - writing a story on the computer, writing a letter to a relative or recording a list for shopping. Any writing in real life context is great to put their skills into practice.

Maths Support at Home

Help your child to learn their 2, 5 and 10 times tables with these fun songs.  We sing along to Percy Parker in the classroom, so your child will be familiar with the songs.

Regular, everyday talk of numbers really helps - notice numbers on houses, talk about weights of food packaging, discuss the time, all these chats really help put maths into real life context.

Also, work with your child to complete weekly arithmetic homework set each Friday to be taken in the following Friday.

Topic Support

We have tried to create topics in which many subjects can be moulded together and where learning is in context and interesting. Take your time to read through the curriculum outline and learn about our topic alongside your child.  Read and discuss traditional fairy tales and non-fiction books about castles and the Royal family.  If you're able to, why not visit the two nearest castles in Suffolk, Framlingham and Orford?
